As of September 2011, Bt corn cultivation in Spain has reached a record high of 97,326 hectares, representing 26.5 per cent of total grain maize planted in the country for 2011. Aragon, an autonomous community has the largest area planted with Bt corn at 41,368 hectares, 12,716 more than in 2010. Catalonia and Extremadura followed with 29,632 and 10,567 hectares respectively. Thus again in 2011, farmers have relied on genetically modified varieties, seeds that allow them to increase the production of more sustainable and decreased resource consumption per unit of production: less land, less water and less energy.
