On the 12 June 2007, the European Union (EU) agricultural ministers announced new regulations for organic products and GM labelling. Under the new regulations, the use of the EU organic logo will be mandatory however, it can now be accompanied by national or private logos. Furthermore, to be eligible for an organic label, 95 per cent of the ingredients must be organic. The origin of where the product was farmed must also be indicated on the label. If a product contains organic ingredients it will be allowed to state that in the ingredient list but will not be entitled to carry the organic label unless 95 per cent of the ingredients are organic.

The intended use of GM foods in an organic product is still not allowed however the 0.9 per cent threshold for the unintentional presence of genetically modified organism’s (GMO’s) has now been adapted in organic products.
