AUS – GM CARNATIONS MAKE GMO REGISTER

29 November 2006. Source: Office of the Gene Technology Regulator – www.ogtr.gov.au

On 24 August 2005 we advised you that we had received a request from Florigene Ltd (Register 001/2004) for inclusion of dealings with four genetically modified carnation lines on the GMO Register and sought information relevant to risks to human health and safety and the environment prior to making a determination.

You may be interested to know that the Gene Technology Regulator has made a determination in regard to this application which will be the first entry on the GMO Register.

The GMO Register is a listing provided under the Gene Technology Act 2000 and corresponding State and Territory legislation where dealings with GMOs that have been previously licensed may be placed if they pose a minimal risk to human health and safety and the environment and do not require a licence.

The dealings that Florigene proposed for inclusion on the GMO Register are the same as those authorised by DIR licence 030/2002, ie commercial scale release involving the Australia-wide propagation, growth and distribution of carnations modified for flower colour.
