AgForce Queensland is urging other states to lift their moratoriums on the commercial production of GM crops in the wake of overwhelming evidence that these crops are capable of increasing yields during drought.

AgForce Grains president, Lyndon Pfeffer, said research had identified GM crops for improved water use efficiency and increased yields under dry conditions.

“We believe these crops can be part of finding a long-term solution for drought preparedness,’’ Mr Pfeffer said.

“Queensland is currently the only state in Australia that does not have a moratorium.

“So no company is willing to invest in varieties suited to our climatic conditions.

“AgForce supports GM crops as long as they are scientifically tested and approved by the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR).

"This balanced approach is one shared by the Queensland Government - the only state government in Australia, who on this issue, is truly being the ‘Smart State’,’’ he said.
