Who is Agrifood Awareness Australia Limited?

Agrifood Awareness Australia Limited (AFAA), launched in May 1999, is an industry initiative, established to increase public awareness of, and encourage informed debate and decision-making about gene technology. AFAA is committed to providing quality, factual, science-based information on the use of gene technology in agriculture to allow for informed decisions.

Members and partners
Agrifood Awareness Australia Limited is a Company Limited by Guarantee with three founding members:

  • CropLife Australia which represents the developers, registrants, manufacturers and formulators of plant science solutions for use in agriculture and the management of pests in other settings. As the industry's peak representative body, CropLife Australia leads industry efforts to ensure a science based, efficient and effective regulatory and policy environment that supports innovation and encourages high quality products.

  • Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) which is one of the world's leading grains research organisations, responsible for planning, investing and overseeing research and development, delivering improvements in production, sustainability and profitability across the Australian grains industry. The GRDC's mission is to invest in research and development for the greatest benefit to its stakeholders - graingrowers and the Commonwealth. The GRDC's vision is a profitable, internationally competitive and ecologically sustainable grains industry.

  • National Farmers' Federation Ltd (NFF) which is the peak national body representing farmers and, more broadly, agriculture across Australia. The NFF is devoted to proactively generating greater understanding and awareness of farming's role, contribution and value to the entire community.

Agrifood Awareness Australia Limited’s activities are also supported by the cotton and sugar industries, the Grain Growers Association (See: www.graingrowers.com.au) and through a project partnership with the red meat industry.

Resource material
AFAA has available an extensive collection of information materials to enhance informed decision-making. These include:

  • Booklets – AFAA has produced three booklets covering general gene technology information, gene technology in horticulture and the topic of coexistence.
  • Information packs – AFAA’s information packs contain AFAA’s booklets, 14 information papers and eight issues papers covering a wide range of topics.
  • Website – the AFAA website provides easily accessible and comprehensive information on global gene technology developments, and includes a resource section listing specific resources on relevant gene technology topics. See: www.afaa.com.au.

Agrifood Awareness Australia Limited also conducts a strong education program. The organisation can assist in identifying expert speakers for events, and also coordinates two-day, hands-on gene technology for decision makers workshops conducted by CSIRO. The workshops help build knowledge about the science and regulations behind gene technology, the Australian experience to-date, and products in the pipeline.
