GM Canola 2010

Genetically modified (GM) canola was planted commercially for the very first time in Canada, Australia’s major competitor, in 1996. In Australia, it was grown commercially for the first time in 2008, by 108 growers in New South Wales (NSW) and Victoria. In 2009, the area in NSW and Victoria increased four-fold, with 300 growers planting GM canola varieties. In addition, the WA Government approved a GM canola trial which saw 860 hectares of GM canola grown (under an exemption order) by 17 growers in WA.

In 2010, GM canola will be grown commercially in NSW, Victoria and WA. It is anticipated that around 100,000 to 120,000 hectares will be planted.
